Healthy hearts
Deaths from heart-related disease in Leicester are significantly higher than for the rest of England. And the city's leading cause of heart-related deaths is cardiovascular disease - or CVD - the name for range of conditions affecting the veins, heart and arteries.
Tackling CVD is one of the city's four top health priorities for the next few years.
CVD occurs when blood vessels are clogged up by fatty deposits. They get narrow and lose their elasticity, which reduces blood flow, leading to poor circulation. Cardiovascular disease is often associated with heart attacks and strokes.
Tackling Leicester's CVD problem requires a range of measures, including control of cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as control of blood glucose for people with diabetes, for more information click here. It also relies on effective campaigns to reduce smoking and obesity.
A healthy lifestyle is the best way to prevent this kind of ill health. To find out more about ways to look after your heart - and your circulation click here.
