Preventing swine flu
Preventing the spread of germs is the single most effective way to slow the spread of diseases such as swine flu. The virus can live on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours. Home and workplace hygiee are as important as personal cleanliness.
You should always:
Ensure everyone washes their hands regularly with soap and water
Clean surfaces regularly to get rid of germs
Use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
Place used tissues in a bin as soon as possible
Be prepared
Keep a medicine cupboard stocked with over-the-counter remedies, inluding your normal pain-relief tablets, a thermometer to check for high temperatures, cough and cold treatment and lozenges for sore throats.
Read the instructions carefully even with familiar over-the-counter remedies. Be aware that aspirin, for instance, should never be given to children and adolescents up to 16 years of age unless a doctor advises it. Children should be given children's liquid painkillers. Aspirin should not be taken after the 28th week of pregnancy, or when breastfeeding. Paracetamol is safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding.
