Leicester's Healthy Heart is the campaign that is raising awareness of the aspects of life that put us at risk of developing cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, and is aiming to get the city walking to improve our heart health.
Cardiovascular disease is one of the biggest causes of early death in the city. The campaign has been developed by NHS Leicester City and Leicester City Council to help address the problem and help local people to live longer, healthier, happier lives.
You can reduce your risk of heart disease by:
Eating healthily
Being physically active
Giving up smoking
Drinking less alcohol
Through this campaign we are helping to address one of these aspects -being physically active.
We would like to encourage as many people as possible in the city to sign up to the campaign. By participating you will:
Learn more about heart disease and what causes it
Take part in our walking challenge
Walk as much as you can over the summer
Record how many minutes you walk for
Log your walks online or send them in by post
Win prizes
Reduce your risk
Walking keeps your heart strong and lowers your blood pressure among other health benefits. It is the perfect activity to improve your heart health because:
You can do it anytime, anywhere
It's free and you don't need special equipment
It's a chance to make new friends
You can start slowly and build up gently.
You can sign up to the campaign on the website- www.leicestershealthyheart.co.uk.
Alternatively visit your local Leicester Library or come and see us at one of the events we are attending.
